CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- We're learning more information about the assignments for the hundreds of extra law enforcement officers in Charlotte for the Democratic National Convention. While many of them are in uptown Charlotte providing extra security, others are out patrolling Charlotte streets, handling calls unrelated to the DNC.

From Chicago to Apex and everywhere in between, hundreds of out of town officers are in Charlotte this week helping out with the Democratic National Convention.

Winston-Salem sent about 100 officers, many of them stationed throughout center city.

"A little exciting on one end of the spectrum and a little exhausting on the other end," said Natoshia James from the Winston-Salem Police Department.

CMPD called on officers from across the state to help. They say with an event this large, there's no way one department could handle it.

"With everything going on uptown, obviously they've planned for the best and worst events uptown," said Lt. Fred Newell from CMPD. "We want to make sure we plan for everything, contingency plans out here in the divisions as well."

Plans still include day-to-day patrols. CMPD enlisted some of the out of town officers to help in other divisions where they shifted officers to cover convention events.

"The day in day out workings of what we do. We've got other agencies riding with us as we're out answering calls," said Newell.

Some officers are in their cars, others riding along with CMPD. They may wear different uniforms but they have one goal: Protect every citizen no matter their location.
