N.Y. offers budget seasonal getaways
In the face of a declining economy, one of the best ways to cut corners on travel is to explore some of the tucked-away nooks in New York State.

With many parts of New York State enjoying peak foliage conditions, there is a harvest of good deals on hotel and bed-and-breakfast stays being offered by the New York State Department of Economic Development. Getaways average about $150 a night and are valid through November 15. Visit www.iloveny.com/fall for details.

If you are looking more for a December dash-away, you'll warm up to this deal at one of my favorite hotels in the state, the 140-year-old Mohonk Mountain House. It claims the largest number of wood-burning fireplaces of any resort in the United States, with 124 units spread among 265 guest rooms.

The National Historic Landmark resort, just 90 miles north of New York City, is offering a midweek "December Delight" package. Available Sunday through Thursday, from November 30 through December 23, rates start at $165 per person, per night based on double occupancy. Costs include resort activities, afternoon tea and cookies and a four-course dinner and breakfast buffet. Midweek, between December 14-23, kids aged 12 and under stay free.
