MLB.com AtBat 12

It's not really all that new, but when talking about apps at the start of a new baseball season it would almost be irresponsible not to touch on one of the most comprehensive sports apps available, "MLB.com AtBat 12."

For starters, users can watch every single out-of-market game or get Live Look-ins at key plays from any game, even a local team's game. There are also radio broadcasts, highlights, box scores and archived games.

Perhaps the best feature for those who have missed a match-up is the ability to watch condensed games, where all the action is squeezed down to about 10 to 20 minutes.

"MLB.com AtBat 12" is available on just about any mobile device —iOS, Android, Kindle Fire, Blackberry, Windows phones. Keep in mind, different devices offer different features, as iOS and Android devices offer everything, but the others have just a handful of functions.

The cost for all this just adds a bit more confusion. While the app and certain aspects within it are free, to watch all the live games one needs to be an MLB.tv premium subscriber, which is $125 a year. Those who don't need all the games live, can opt for an in-app subscription purchase of $2.99 a month or $14.99 for the entire season, which offers one free live game a day plus all the other features.

MLB.com At The Ballpark

MLB.com also has an app for users seeing a real game in person, called "At The Ballpark." It provides interactive maps of each ballpark. Those who check in through Foursquare can get offers, rewards, specials and even exclusive content. There is also a team schedule with promotions, ticket information and parking information.

At the moment at four stadiums — in Miami, Philadelphia, Houston and Phoenix — fans can order food within the app.

"MLB.com At The Ballpark" is a free app for iOS and Android devices.
