There are many iconic images of San Francisco, but none quite so emblematic of the universally loved “City By the Bay” as the Golden Gate Bridge.

“It’s the gateway to the pacific, the gateway to America, it symbolizes innovation, inspiration and the west. it means a lot of different things to people," said David Shaw of the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy.

"The bridge is beautiful and every time you see it, it makes you happy to see it. Right now when we went under it we took pictures of the kids looking up at the bridge, it’s beautiful, momentous, we love it," said tourist Anna Mountain.

This year is a big year for the span, as it celebrates its diamond anniversary.

"If you are lucky enough this year to come and visit the bridge, there will be a whole new visitor experience at the bridge. And that’s really the legacy of the 75th anniversary," Shaw said.

The actual anniversary is May 27th, coinciding with Memorial Day weekend.

"About four miles of activities along the north waterfront of the city, and it will end with of course a grand finale and fireworks," Shaw said.

The bridge will not be closed to traffic on its 75th birthday as it was 25 years ago, but that shouldn’t make a difference.

"The sidewalks are open to both pedestrians and bicycles. You can just admire the amazing views from the bridge, on the bridge, of the bridge. You can hike trails, the bridge itself is a trail itself," noted Shaw.

For visitors, the Hyatt At Fisherman’s Wharf has a special package through November 3 starting at $219 a night, including two passes for a sightseeing cruise around the bay.
