With their fawn like face and graceful movement, it’s no wonder the Italian Greyhound has been a family favorite for over 2,000 years. These small sight hounds, 8-15 lbs. on average, are believed to have been developed as companions and small animal hunters among families in Mediterranean countries. Images of these elegant canines can be found in the art of ancient cultures and in many Italian Renaissance works.

These dogs are naturally very thin and delicate. It’s not uncommon for them to have hip or joint issues and even fracture leg or tail bones from an awkward landing or fall. Pet parents of this breed might want to look into pet health insurance due to the high cost of orthopedic surgery, which can catch many unprepared.

Another common health issue for Italian greyhounds is gum disease and tooth loss. Daily brushing and annual cleanings by your vet can help keep their teeth healthier longer. Some pet parents of Italian Greyhounds say their dogs are finicky eaters however you should have your vet check their teeth. Hard food may be painful to eat if they are suffering in silence from gum disease.

To keep the affectionate and intelligent Italian Greyhound happy and healthy, they need daily walks with you, not alone time in the yard, lots of time with their humans, quality food for active breeds and a cozy place to sleep.
