Swimming pools are known for water waste, chemicals and energy inefficient equipment. That's not exactly a model for sustainability but the industry is changing.
“Oh absolutely, people are becoming much more conscientious of energy consumption and our industry is gearing toward being more green. That's definitely the way the industry is turning right now,” said Kevin Tross, pool expert.
Step one is where the pool is installed in your backyard.
“There are some things that you can do when you're in the design stage. Be aware of your prevailing winds,” said Tross.
Wind will cool your pool and you'll spend more to keep it swimmable.
“Obviously, the least expensive way to heat your pool is the sun or solar but we live in an area where we're not always going to get that but solar covers are very helpful even if you heat with fossil fuel or a heat pump you still should have a solar cover to retain your heat so they're essential here in the northeast,” said Tross.
Kevin Tross says heat pumps are more expensive upfront but will save you money in the long run.
“New technology is making a big difference,” said Tross.
One of the things is in filtration with filter systems that don't require backwashing and flushing which disburse chemicals and discharge water into the groundwater.
Using salt instead of chemicals is becoming more popular.
“It's interesting, the salt actually manufactures your chlorine so you're not physically adding chlorine to the pool, the pool's manufacturing it,” said Tross.
Another energy saving device is the programmable pump that uses 80 percent less energy than the traditional model.
“This is the Intelepro Pump, a multiple speed pump, and a 220 hook-up, which makes it more energy efficient. It operates at multiple speeds; it's programmable so you can slow the pace of the pump down,” said Tross.
And they even offer energy efficient LED lights for your swimming pool.
