There's a new art exhibit at the New York State Museum in Albany, and the artists are SUNY students. Vince Gallagher reports.

"And we wanted to use student work and we developed a system that enabled us to do so, first with selections made by local campus contact," said Joe Hildreth, SUNY Art Curator.

Then, jurors were brought in to select work to be included, officially resulting in "The Best of SUNY Student Art Exhibition."

"The students range from students in community colleges which would be in their first or second year of study to students in the senior colleges, which might be in their fourth year," said Hildreth.

Student works range from painting to photography to ceramic, and one student submitted a work done on wood panels.

"It's a photo transfer and he used eleven by seventeen inch photo transfers and in a very meticulous fashion, even through and I think there's a total of sixty different transfers to produce this one image," Hildreth explained.

The exhibition features 68 works selected from more than 316 student artistic pieces. Since they are on display at the New York State Museum, it shows how diverse art can continue to be in the SUNY system.

"It provides us the opportunity to expose the work to a large cross section of people that are coming to the New York State Museum, and of course we're very proud of the works, so it's a great match to be able to show their great work that's being produced in SUNY schools," said Hildreth.

Although it was a tough choice, there were also student awards, including three $1,000 scholarships and four honorable mentions worth $500.

"And it's nice to be able to give this kind of recognition to students and I only wish we had more but that's what we have and pleased to be able to award it," said Hildreth.

To view the artists representing SUNY's 64 campuses, The Best of SUNY Student Art Exhibition runs through September 3rd at the New York State Museum.
