Lou Manna says the strategies he uses to capture athletes can also apply to snapping shots of kids on the go.

"As a professional I can tell you that as you shoot action you have to anticipate the action, you have to be aware of where someone is going," says Manna. "I pre-focus in manual focus mode to a spot I know they're going to hit. When they hit that spot, bing, I snap the shot. Same thing at home with your kids, it's tough to follow the action, these kids are running all over the place even faster than the tennis pros

Manna also suggests novice photographers remember to pre-focus by pushing their shutter trigger, also know as the button, down halfway, and then holding it there until they see what they want, and then pushing it down all the way.

Moreover, make sure to have the camera in sports mode or shutter priority mode, Manna says.

"The shutter speed is what opens and closes, so that it lets the light into the camera," he says. "If you use a slow shutter speed, obviously whatever's moving is going to be blurred. So to capture something, especially something [like a tennis ball], I'm shooting 1,000th of a second to 2,000th of a second. For something like that, you can use the S mode, which is shutter speed where you set the shutter speed."

Composition is also key, says Manna. You don't always have to put your subject right in the middle of the frame, and along those lines, you don't always have to keep your camera right in front of your face.

"Try and place the subject slightly off-center," says Manna. "It'll create more movement for your eye."

Manna suggests shooting low, high, or side to side for more artsy looks.

Other tips: look away from the action for things like crowd shots, don't be afraid to mess with the camera's built-in filters for a bit of a different look, and take full advantage of the camera's full features for capturing video and audio of an event, too.
