What's in your medicine cabinet?

By: Marcie Fraser

What's in your medicine cabinet?
Where's your medicine cabinet? Most often, it's in the bathroom and according to some experts, it may not be the best place. Like most bathrooms they get hot and steamy, a problem for medicine if that's where they are kept.

"When you think about what goes on in the bathroom, temperature changes and humidity, that can really have an impact on the potency of the medication. So you try to keep them out of the bathroom and in the linen closet or make sure they are high enough and accessible to adults and children can't get them," said pharmacist Mike Lenz.

According to Lenz, medicine cabinets get cluttered fast. Get into the habit of cleaning them out before expired drugs pile up.

“At least monthly checks to see what went out of date, but once a year you might want to think about doing kind of a New Year’s cleaning to take a close look at all the medications in the house," Lenz said.

Basic medications include Band-Aids, tape, gauze, alcohol wipes, a thermometer, antiseptic like Bacteine and Neosporine. If you have kids, be sure to have children’s pain reliever on hand as well as a cold and chest congestion and allergy reliever. Always good to have, adult Tylenol, Advil, and over-the-counter flu remedies,” said Lenz.

Experts advise with prescription medication, stay on top of the expiration. When it's done, throw it out - but how you throw it out is important.

"You should remove any medicine from your home, not down the drain. Throw it out in your garbage. Before you do that, take your bottles, remove any personal information about what the product is, mix it in with some undesirable substance, be it coffee grounds, kitty litter, seal it in a container, and throw it in the garbage, " Lenz said.
