SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Later this week, YNN and other television stations in Syracuse will team up to bring awareness to the sexual, verbal, and physical abuse of children.
On Wednesday night, all of the TV stations in the market will air a one hour special called Protecting Our Children. The special includes anchors from each of the local stations, and was put together in conjunction with the McMahon-Ryan Child Advocacy Center, which helps kids affected by abuse.
Our Julie Chapman is representing YNN on the special. She and the other anchors appeared on channel 9's ‘Bridge Street’ Monday morning to promote the event. Julie talked about her experience working with the Advocacy Center.
"That's what is so wonderful about McMahon-Ryan. In one of our specials, it actually takes you through the center and through the whole process as if you were a child, and that's pretty moving as well because you can see firsthand what the facility looks like, who you encounter, and how these investigators have this really sensitive and important job of talking to these kids," said Chapman.
YNN will be airing the special Wednesday at 7 p.m. That morning from 6-9 a.m. and again from 5-9 p.m., volunteers from the Onondaga County Child Abuse Response Team will be manning a phone bank to answer questions about everything from the warning signs to how to report suspected child abuse.
The toll-free phone number to call during those hours is 1-877-880-5211.
