Lewis County and the Tug Hill region will be in the national spotlight this fall, and it's creating some excitement amongst ATV enthusiasts. Our Amanda Kelley reports.
LEWIS COUNTY, N.Y. -- Miles of open trail, challenging courses and plenty of mud. It's what ATV riders love about Lewis County.
Copenhagen Resident James Hall said, "It's the best place on earth. If you don't live on Tug Hill you don't live any place."
For years local businesses and riders have worked to attract more attention to the area despite tough ATV laws in the State. Now they're about to take the National Spotlight as Brian Fisher's ATV World plans to film their show right on Tug Hill.
Tug Hill Adirondack ATV Association Expo Director Lee Staelen said, "There's anywhere from three to four million viewers on his show every week. "
The Outdoor Channel filming will coincide with the 2012 Tug Hill Experience ATV Manufacturers Outdoor Trade Show and Expo, showcasing ATV tourism and what the Hill can offer.
Staelen said, "It brings a spotlight to our sport and it brings a spotlight to Lewis County and to the business owners here in Lewis County."
This announcement is exciting many local business owners. They're hoping it draws in riders and dollars to Tug Hill after a tough winter.
Flat Rock Inn Owner Gordon Yancey said, "It was extreme. The snowfall was about a third of what it typically should have been for the Tug Hill region."
The lack of snowmobilers stopping into Flat Rock in hurt Yancy's business along with many others. But this expo along with a National TV spot might just help those who rely on tourism dollars.
Staelen said, "We've already heard from people from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Vermont and now Canada that are planning and already booking rooms to come in for that weekend."
Towns that have previously hosted Fisher's ATV world saw up to a 40% increase in their trail usage after the show, and many believe that could happen for these trails as well.
Yancey said, "Lewis County has extreme potential."
Potential that many business owners and riders alike are looking forward to showing thousands this fall.
The Expo will be held September 22nd and 23rd. For more details you can check out tughillatvexpo.com.
