BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. -- A congregation in Vestal has gotten the final go-ahead to construct a new church.
Our Lady of Sorrows has been looking to build for the past 12 years. After a great deal of research and fundraising they now have clearance from the Syracuse Catholic Diocese to build on their current property.
The new building will be connected to the existing building, gymnasium and former school, bringing it all under one roof.
It will have a capacity for 600 people with overflow seating for 150 people and a greeting area and offices. Parishioners have already raised more than $2.8 million of the $3.6 needed for construction. They're planning other fundraisers to help cover the final costs.
Construction should get underway this September.
