A group that helps those in need is expanding. Members of the Impact Project officially opened their first office in Greene Wednesday. Our Melissa Kakareka has more on what it means for the organization and the community members that they help.
GREENE, N.Y. -- It's been about eight years since Jim Willard first had the idea to the start the Impact Project. The non-profit organization helps low-income and elderly community members make repairs to their homes. Since that time, volunteers from the group have done construction on 49 homes.
"Basically, we show up at a house, once they are approved, with a mass amount of people, 50 to 100 people and in a day, we fix it," said Impact Project Director Jim Willard.
But the group has never had a central headquarters, operating mostly out of its director's garage. Something that all changed on Wednesday, when members of the organization gathered for a grand opening celebration at their first office.
The organization inherited the property from a supporter of the Impact Project. The new office was built and financed by volunteers and supporters from the community.
"We've been truly blessed. We've been able to build a headquarters building with no debt, total volunteer labor in a year-and-half-two years. It’s just an awesome task," said Willard.
It's a step that will help the Impact Project organize and expand its operations.
"It will give us a place to centralize from, operate from and streamline this process, instead of doing one or two a year, we are hoping to do six, seven, eight a year," said Willard.
As it looks to help more people in need in the future.
