ENDICOTT, N.Y. - Willie Wood won a spot in the in the Dick's Sporting Goods Open through a qualifying round on Tuesday and on Sunday he won the whole thing by tying Michael Allen for the lead on the final hole of regulation then beating him with a par on the first hole of a playoff.
Wood shot 4-under par to finish 13-under for his first Champions Tour win and only his second professional victory, the last coming on the PGA Tour in 1996.
Local favorite Joey Sindelar, a native of Horseheads, finished one stroke behind in a third-place tie with Kenny Perry, Tom Lehman, and Brad Faxon, who held the lead for most of the day before bogeying the 17th hole to fall behind Allen and barely missing a birdie putt on the 18th that would have created a three-way playoff.
John Huston, the defending champion who entered the final round with a one-stroke lead, collapsed early and shot 5-over par to end up six strokes behind. Hall of Famer Tom Watson finished 2-under par, and Wayne Levi, a Little Falls native who now has a home in New Hartford, ended at 1-over.
