SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The new snow leopards at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse now have names.
Zoo officials announced the winning entries for the two babies Thursday. They come from Julianna Buchmann, 10, of Weedsport, and Karen Dunford, 40, Nedrow.
Buchmann chose the name Bajen, which means long awaited in Russian, because the zoo had not had baby cubs in 14 years.
Dunford chose the name Ramil, which originates from Uzbekistan, because that is where snow leopards live.
There were 563 pairs of names submitted and then they were narrowed down to five final pairs by the judges.
Nearly 900 people voted in the contest, with the winners getting more than 36 percent of the votes.
