SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Police continue their investigation into a deadly fire that claimed the life of a homeless man Friday night at a campsite along Interstate 690 near Catherine Street.
Friends of the victim, who identify him as "Tim," have now set up a small memorial to their friend along a highway on-ramp along Townsend Street. They say the publicity surrounding the fire and the campsites might remind people of the continuing problem of homelessness and the need for help.
"They try to keep us out of their heads because they don't want to think about who's suffering out there that doesn't have nothing for themselves. Either they can't get a job or they're disabled or their parents don't want to help them. You do what you got to do, so you do the street survival stuff. And you learn how to live off of it," “Lefty” said.
Syracuse's homeless population is put in the hundreds, although only a few dozen are believed to live in the make shift camps.
