If you waited until Sunday to go shopping for the latest iPhone, you might be out of luck. Stores around the country are reportedly selling out of the phone just days after getting them in stock, even after Apple sold two million in preorders. Sarah Blazonis reports.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The shape, that menu, the familiar logo . It's not hard to spot an iPhone these days, or the signs that the release of a new version is right around the corner. Even after six generations, it's a gadget that can still get people to spend hours in line, waiting to be one of the first to own one.
Sheila Sicilia is not one of those people. "I still have an iPhone 3Gs, which is a couple of generations old," she said.
Sicilia is an associate professor for computer studies at Onondaga Community College. She says from a technological perspective, there are a few reasons people are excited about the new iPhone 5. They include a faster processor, more memory for it to work with, and 4G LTE data speeds.
"If you are traveling all the time, using your iPhone to work via the internet while you're traveling, that could buy you enough extra productivity in a week that it could pay for itself that way," said Sicilia.
There's also a new operating system, iOS 6. The company's web site says it includes more than 200 new features.
But, Sicilia says owners of older iPhones will be able to access some of those extras .
"I'll have some nice things like not being able to shut off my sound totally but let certain calls get through, like my family," she said.
But staying up-to-date with the latest technology probably isn't the only thing that drives some to camp out for hours.
"There are people who have the money and want the latest and greatest, and some really view it as a status symbol, they have to keep up with their friends and it's all a part of their image," said Sicilia of another possible reason for the high demand.
So while some people need it and some just want it, many more will have to wait to get their hands on it. Some stores nationwide report being sold out by Sunday, and Apple says online orders will ship in about three weeks.
Apple is expected to announce early sales results for the iPhone 5 on Monday.
