Halloween season has replaced fall as the season after summer. Fright Nights at the Fair, the CNY Great Pumpkin Festival, and the Oswego Zombie Crawl all kicked off the festivities this weekend. Many homes have already been decorated for the frightful holiday for over a week now. Our Katie Gibas tells us what made Halloween a season of its own.
OSWEGO, N.Y. -- It's not even October yet and zombies are already trying to eat my brains.
"Every year it just seems like it goes a little earlier," said Laurie Krul, Stony Meadow Farm Co-Owner.
Zombies invaded Oswego for the unofficial start to Halloween Season. That's right, it's transformed from just one day or week of fun, to its own season. The CNY Great Pumpkin Festival Saturday was followed by the second annual Oswego Zombie Crawl.
"Halloween just seems to stretch out further and further because there's so many people that are fans of Halloween, like I am and my friends are. So this really is becoming kind of like an opening to Halloween. We did it near Halloween last year, and it was competing against other things. This time, it's like we'll do it in advance and it gets people in the spirit nice and early," said Tim Nekritz, Oswego Zombie Crawl Co-Organizer.
One of the reasons Halloween seems to be coming earlier and earlier every year, is well, it's just a lot of fun and you can be anything you want.
"One of the things about Halloween is it allows you to be someone else and to just do something a little crazy once in a while like wander around like a zombie or go to a party in costume. So for a lot of people, it just kind of becomes a cathartic celebration and obviously, they want to do it more than one night. They don't mind doing it two, three nights or weeks and weeks in advance," said Nekritz.
But is it too early to be worrying about ghosts, goblins and zombies?
"If Halloween stretches out more and more into fall, then more power to us," said Nekritz.
Krul added, "There's a lot of decorations out already. And that's great. I'm glad people have the fever. And it's nice to see the color."
So instead of just having to worry about zombies October 31, it looks like you'll have to be on the lookout for the next month.
