SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Calling hours were held on Wednesday in honor of the late United States Navy petty officer killed in a car crash in Saratoga County. Friends and family grieved the loss of Joshua Smith, 20, of DeRuyter, after he and another member of the United States Navy were killed in a head-on car crash last week.
Friends and family said Smith was funny, smart, a brilliant musician, and a role model.
"He didn't just fly by night, he made real choices and accomplished more in 20 years than a lot of people accomplish in a much longer span of life," said Tonya Kolbasook, a family friend.
Smith graduated in September from the Naval Nuclear Power Training Command in Charleston, South Carolina, and had recently transferred to Ballston Spa to begin his final training to become a Nuclear Power Engineer.
