ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Stuart Lewis Wilcox was handed his honorary high school diploma from district officials.
In 1965, half way through his senior year at Elmira Free Academy, Wilcox left school and joined the Army to serve his country during the Vietnam War.
He spent 19 months serving, but when he came home he took a night class to receive an external diploma.
Over forty years later he was contacted by the local VA's office who told him how he could receive his real diploma from district officials. Surrounded by his family, Wilcox says it was an honor to be recognized.
"I fulfilled what I wanted to do. If you put your heart to it you can do anything, and it's really a good feeling. Now I've got two diplomas," said Stuart Wilcox, Vietnam veteran.
Wilcox still lives in Elmira, and in addition to celebrating his diploma, it was his wife's 62nd birthday.
