UNITED STATES -- Central New York was cheering loud as hometown hero Breanna Stewart led her UConn Huskies to another national title Tuesday night.
The former Cicero-North Syracuse standout scored 23 points and had nine rebounds and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament. Her 23 points were also the most by any UConn freshman in a national title game.
We spoke with Stewart's high school coach Tuesday, who said he had no doubt that she would play great and lead her team to the title.
"For several years while she was in high school, this was the place where she wanted to be. She wanted to be on this stage. She wanted to compete with the elite players. Make a difference at UConn and win National Championships," Coach Eric Smith said.
Smith told us he planned to shoot her a text message after the game and we’re sure he had some encouraging words after that performance. Stewart's parents were also on hand to watch the game in person.
