SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- For the second time in less than a week, a Syracuse neighborhood is mourning a tragedy. Police say a young woman was killed while she was standing at a memorial for a man killed near the same spot last week.
The 23-year-old victim was at the memorial for Karon Cole in front of 107 Knaul Street Sunday afternoon. That's when a man shot the woman at point blank range.
She was taken to Upstate University Hospital for emergency surgery and died a short time later. Neighbors say the victim planned to attend a vigil for Cole scheduled for that evening.
Police planned to canvass the area and talk to witnesses, something that's played a role in solving recent violent crimes in the city.
Sgt. Tom Connellan said, "Cooperation from the public is key to the success of us making arrests. Unless we're able to capture a suspect fleeing the scene, getting information from the public, it's what drives our machine. It's what makes us make those arrests."
