It's a lot of hard work, but running a volunteer, no-kill dog shelter is certainly rewarding. But as YNN's Katie Husband reports, Tanner's P.A.W.S. dog shelter in Corning still needs some extra help to keep the facility running.
CORNING, N.Y. -- Dealing with barking dogs all day could give you a headache, but it is other stress that is causing problems for the owner and staff of Tanner's P.A.W.S. in Corning.
"That we are all volunteers and we all carry full time jobs. So, just having the volunteers available when we need them, having the funding available," said Christie Speciale, founder and president of Tanner's P.A.W.S.
The no-kill dog shelter runs on volunteers and donations. It was founded last March. Shannon Mixey is one of the volunteers at the shelter.
"You just kind of get to know them. You take them out, you play with them and hang around with them, pet them and give them treats and all that other stuff," said Mixey.
Other duties include taking the animals to the vet, caring for wounds and taking on another animal at any unexpected time.
"It is definitely not glamorous. It's a lot of hard work, time, energy. It's something that's definitely all for the animals. I mean, you can tell that everyone of us has it in our hearts to help the animals because that's what it's all about," said Speciale.
Working at an all-volunteer shelter is hard work, but the volunteers said it is all worthwhile.
"When you hear one of the dogs gets adopted, you feel like you did something good and you saved a life instead of just not being there," said Mixey.
But to help continue saving the lives of dogs, Tanner's P.A.W.S. is in the running for two contests. One is through the Animal Rescue Site, and the other is through Tractor Supply Company.
"We ultimately need this funding to stay in business. We are all donation based. We are a 501 C3 so it is a tax write-off, but without this funding and without these grants and winning these contests we won't be able to operate and save animals," said Speciale.
