We all know how much of a hassle getting a speeding ticket can be, but a Syracuse company is looking to turn a ticket into something positive. YNN's Candace Hopkins tells us where drivers with a lead foot are getting a green light.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Speeding tickets can be a burden for many people. And once you get that ticket, you have to pay a fine or appear in court. There's nothing good about the experience.
But at Pole Position in Destiny USA, they are looking for people putting the pedal to the medal.
"We are extending an offer to people who gotten a speeding ticket between Memorial Day and Labor Day of this summer, to race for free on our controlled track, just as a way to give people an opportunity to get their need for speed out in a safe way," said Pole Position Manager Stephen Whitacre.
Pole Position is running the promotion at all of their locations nationwide. Here in Syracuse, their go-karts go up to 45 miles per hour around a course designed by race car drivers.
"We have a quarter mile track that is modeled after a European Formula One track and it's real racing," said Whitacre.
One of Pole Position's own employees, Stephanie Ferguson, got a ticket back in July and she became the first person to try out the promotion here in Syracuse.
"I come here all the time to race, so I don't get the urge to race in my car, pretty much," said Ferguson.
But staff says they don't want to send the wrong message.
"Do it in a safe, controlled environment, like Pole Position. Keep our families safe out on the road and each other and save it for the track," said Whitacre.
And they do have one high profile fan locally. Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin Walsh loves the go karts, but hopes the promotion encourages safe driving.
"I get into a go kart and I have the racing juices get going and I love it and as a matter of fact, I've been known to out-race my grandchildren. I would hope that they get it out of their system on the go kart track and not have to think about doing reckless things on the highway," said Walsh.
On the track, you won't be able to feel the wind in your hair, but by speeding here, you'll help your pocket, driving record and possibly your health.
You can use the summer speeding tickets at Pole Position through Sept. 2.
