CICERO, N.Y. -- In an effort to fight mosquito-borne diseases, the Onondaga County Department of Health will spray several areas in Cicero.
The EEE virus was discovered in two mosquito pools near the Cicero Swamp last week. Aerial spraying is scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m. at the swamp and its surrounding areas.
Although spraying helps to reduce the mosquito populations, officials are still urging residents to take precautions.
"It's really important for everybody to use this as an opportunity to increase awareness and protect themselves, we're reducing risk by spraying, but there's going to be a lot of mosquitoes out there that the spray doesn't touch," explained Dr. Cynthia Morrow, Onondaga County Health Commissioner.
During Saturday's spraying, residents and pets should stay indoors for at least one hour afterwards. It is also recommended that you keep your windows closed, turn off window air conditioners. Anything left outside during the spraying should be thoroughly washed.
