NEW YORK STATE FAIR -- Some young competitors were up early to participate in the Quarter Horse Open in the Coliseum.
The horses are judged on precision movements as they run and jump hurdles in the horse ring. Most of the riders are amateurs who spend a lot of time training their animals.
One young participant from Madison County told us why she enjoys the competition.
"I love meeting new people, seeing all the different horses seeing all the different barns, all the different colors and breeds, random horses that people come up with, so it's just so much fun," said Katherine St. Pierre.
