If you come to the fair every year you may think you know every tent and building inside and out. But this year, there's a new attraction and it's bringing New Yorkers back to their agricultural roots. YNN's Cara Thomas caught up with some fair goers about what they thought of the new Taste New York experience.
NEW YORK STATE FAIR -- From north to south and east to west, New York is home to hundreds of food and beverage producers. For the first time the New York State Fair is giving those producers a chance to show off their products.
"I think people are so surprised because they don't realize how much is really here and comes from New York and I think it's important to support local and for more people to know about it and really see what New York has to offer," says Stephanie Ottino from Adirondack Winery.
It's called Taste New York and more than 100 agricultural producers are taking part.
"They're going to be distilleries, they're going to be wineries, beer companies, mustard companies from all over the state," says Joe Morrissey of the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets.
Fairgoers get an opportunity to sample the vendors products and if they like what they taste, people can buy those treats to take home as well.
Ottino said, "This event pulls from so many different areas, we've seen people from all over New York, outside of New York, other states so just to get the coverage and the new experience has been pretty great for us."
"We've gotten a lot of business cards and a lot of things that we've actually purchased was with the Taste of New York. Honey being our favorite," says Syracuse resident, Andrea Sweeting.
It's not just all in one tent. Vendors are spread out across the fairgrounds and in all of the buildings. Organizers say this experience is helping bring the New York State Fair back to its original focus.
Morrissey said, "The main purpose of the fair is to promote New York products and to promote New York Agriculture and Taste New York is a centerpiece of these efforts."
Part of the experience is a Taste New York Trail. Participants can look for vendors with the Taste New York sign and collect stamps for the chance to win a daily prize at the end of the fair. There will be a grand prize as well.
