It's back to school for many in a few a days, but for one teenager in Bradford County, it'll be business as usual. She recently opened up her own bakery after graduating high school, getting a head start on her career. YNN's Crystal Cranmore introduces us to the young businesswoman and tells us what makes her treats so unique.
BRADFORD COUNTY, Pa. -- When you walk into the Blue Roof Bakery, the sweet aroma of baked goods can make it hard to resist.
“I make calf moons, pies, lots of fruit pies, cookies,” said Jessie Rishel.
It's a modest shop in Orwell Township. Rishel makes all of the treats. She recently opened the shop at just 16 years old and spent the summer as her own boss.
“I’ve enjoyed it ever since I was a little kid, helping my mom in the kitchen. I always wanted to have my own place so I can come up with different recipes,” said Rishel.
With the support of her parents and a baker she's been learning from over the years, Rishel made her dream come true. Her family owns the building and renovated it a few months ago. But it was the young businesswoman who raised the $14,000 needed to start the business.
“I make Christmas wreathes from Thanksgiving to Christmas time and over the years, I saved enough to pay for all of the equipment and start up ingredients,” she said.
From cupcakes to pies, the Blue Roof Bakery offers a variety of treats. But one thing that makes it unique is its selection of gluten free products.
“A lot of people around here need gluten free foods, whether it be snacks, desserts, snacks, most importantly breads. I also try to help those who have dairy and soy allergies as well,” said Rishel.
Rishel says she hopes to expand one day to schools and hospitals. She already sells some of her gluten free products at Russel Sprouts farm and Shore Sisters. She says hard work pays off.
“Follow your dreams I guess. I love it.”
Rishel says she plans to take business courses next year. The Blue Roof Bakery is open from one to five on Mondays. You can also call the bakery at (570) 744-6007 to place an order.
