BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- The City of Binghamton joined with its Ukrainian residents Monday to celebrate the 22nd anniversary of Ukraine's independence.
Monday, Mayor Matt Ryan helped raise the Ukrainian flag and proclaimed August 26th, 2013 Ukrainian Independence Day in the city.
In doing so, Ryan recognized the country's efforts over the last two decades to become a democratic nation and the important role of Ukranians in the city.
"I've been very proud to understand how the Ukrainian population especially is committed to making sure that they progress into the future, but also remember their past and pass on traditions. And that's what you've done so well in our community," said Mayor Ryan.
While the flag was raised Monday, the actual Independence Day in the Ukraine was August 24th.
