ITHACA, N.Y. -- Police in Ithaca are investigating a small explosion at the local Wegmans.
Two people were injured in the Wednesday night explosion at the can return machine. Police and fire departments responded to the scene, but the store remained open.
According to investigators, the machine did not appear to malfunction and the victims were using the machine correctly. They have ruled out chemical or biological agents, but officers have opened a criminal investigation.
The couple using the machine at the time suffered minor and moderate injuries to their hands and torsos.
"It blew the doors off of the recycling machine and we believe the doors hit the people, and the swift air from the explosion caused some of the injuries. Bruising swelling, maybe a tingling sensation. These are all things that are common with having been in close proximity to a very small explosion," said Jamie Williamson, Ithaca Police Public Information Officer.
Wegmans declined to be interviewed, but police say they are assisting with the investigation. Anyone with information should contact Ithaca Police.
