The City of Binghamton welcomes a new downtown business. Galaxy Brewing Company celebrated its grand opening Friday. As our Melissa Kakareka tells us, the company is hoping to brew up lots of success.
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- The craft beer industry is playing a growing role in New York's economy.
"We've passed a number of bills to try to improve the viability of the craft beer industry. We're seeing across the state and, in fact, in other places across the country, downtowns are coming back to life around microbreweries," said Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo.
More and more microbreweries are opening or planning to open in Binghamton. The latest one to open its doors in the city is the Galaxy Brewing Company. The owners of the brewpub joined Binghamton elected officials to celebrate their official opening Friday.
"Every store that opens in Binghamton is another testament to our really coming back," said Binghamton Mayor Matt Ryan.
Galaxy Brewing Company was founded in 2011 by Mike and Seth Weisel, a local father and son duo. Mike Weisel says he's been brewing beer in his basement in Endwell for 40 years. In 2011, he and his son decided to make their dream a reality by opening a brewery.
"It was a lot of hard work to get here. It's a combination of relief. And to be honest, I'm a little scared," said Mike Weisel.
The family's local connections are a big part of the brewpub as they emphasize local ingredients and hired local staff and contractors. The brewery features a rotating assortment of beers, as well as food.
"We're trying to be imaginative. We really want every single time you come in to have something different on the menu. I want there to be different beers for you to enjoy and I want you to come downtown. Downtown is becoming very, very different," said Weisel.
