A community in Chemung County is left with a lot of questions and grief after a fire ripped through an Elmira home on Friday night, leaving four people dead. YNNs Crystal Cranmore reports
ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Overwhelmed with emotion, Hayley Inness tried to cope with the recent loss of her best friend. She was one of many to add to a growing memorial outside a home where a fast moving fire claimed the lives of four people on Friday night.
“They were really close. They would come together to my car after school and ask if they could go to the center and play together,” said Lashenda Inness, a family friend.
Authorities say they were called out to Morrow Street just after 9 p.m. Firefighters arrived to find the house engulfed in flames. According to neighbors, they all tried to rescue the victims before crews even arrived to the scene.
“We broke this window out on the left side because there was no fire, and we heard there were kids out there and we were hollering inside the window to get the kids' attention but it was too late,” said Glenn Bolt, a neighbor.
The victims were pulled from the home. Police said they were taken to local hospitals where they later died from their injuries. Meanwhile, neighbors are trying to process the tragic loss.
“This is beyond imagination, you just can’t describe the turmoil,” said Bolt.
The names of the victims have not been released. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
