ITHACA, N.Y. -- Senator Charles Schumer is supporting a new a new partnership between Cornell University and the federal government.
Speaking in Ithaca Tuesday, Schumer said he wants to create a national hub for dairy safety and training at the university. He's urging the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the FDA to work with researchers and experts at the school.
The center would strive to promote best practices among dairy producers, cutting down on food-borne illness and helping the dairy industry to thrive.
"It would facilitate joint research ventures between the federal government and Cornell. It would see that Cornell's groundbreaking research is brought much more quickly to the national stage. And the federal regulators who set standards for dairy safety techniques and best practices could learn a thing or two from all of you. So it would be good for the whole country," Schumer said.
There's no timeline or price tag on the proposal yet, but Schumer says Cornell is the obvious place for a national dairy center.
