NORTH COUNTRY, N.Y. -- Some big changes are coming to health care in the North Country. Plans are in the works to dissolve E.J. Noble Hospital and create a new facility.
E.J. Noble's board of directors approved a "certificate of need" application, which has been presented to the state health department. Under the plan, E.J. Noble would dissolve and sell its assets to the new facility, Gouverneur Hospital. The plan would also establish a parent corporation, St. Lawrence Health System. That corporation would oversee both the new Gouverneur Hospital and Canton-Potsdam Hospital.
The move comes after a lot of recent difficulty for E.J. Noble. The hospital lost $4.5 million last year and officials say they've already lost more than $3.2 million so far this year. And last fall, the hospital was temporarily shut down by the state over safety concerns.
Hospital officials say the proposal will avoid bankruptcy and the new facility will improve the patient experience.
There's no word yet on a timetable for approval of the plan.
