TOMPKINS COUNTY, N.Y. -- Tompkins County Jail will soon be able to house more inmates, thanks to a $900,000 improvement project.
The project includes construction of a new covered outdoor recreation area, while a little used indoor recreation area will be converted to dormitory space.
The jail currently has a maximum capacity of 75 and the new plan will increase capacity to 82 inmates. The county currently spends more than $240,000 a year boarding inmates at other facilities.
The project is expected to pay for itself within five years.
