CINCINNATUS, N.Y. -- As many as a dozen cats and one dog are dead after a fire in Cortland County. Crews responded to the fire at a home on Telephone Road in Cincinnatus just after two Thursday afternoon.
Officials don't believe anyone was home at the time, but several animals were found dead inside. It's believed they died from smoke inhalation, because they were found in an area away from the fire. Officials say the house was severely damaged inside. It took about 40 firefighters less than half an hour to knock out the flames.
"When we got on the scene there was heavy smoke, brownish black type smoke coming out of the second floor. We advanced the line off the first engine, went through the front door. We encountered quite a bit of fire, proceeded up to the second floor where the rest of the fire was. Knocked it down and then we went into an overhaul stage," Cortland County Deputy Fire Coordinator Kevin Whitney.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
