Saturday night, Syracuse University football got back on the winning track during their first home game of the year. An energetic crowd welcomed the team home and as our Candace Hopkins tells us, despite the rough start to the season, fans have high hopes for the team.
SYRACUSE, N.Y.--The Orange rolled into the Carrier Dome Saturday night like a runaway freight train. And that train sound wasn't your imagination, it's new to the Dome this year. It went off every time SU got into the end zone, which, in this blowout, was a lot. The win was a welcome sight for fans, after the season got off to a rough start on the road.
"It was awesome to see coming to the Dome, we were playing Wagner, we started off zero and two, some problems, new coach, new qb, new team, new vibe, but it was great to see everyone came up and supported the team, it was a lot of noise and the crowd was getting excited," said Baldwinsville resident Jonathan Grutka.
"It was absolutely crazy, people were just having a great time and it was just a lot of fun watching it," said East Syracuse resident David Treharne.
More than 30,000 people of all ages welcomed the team home and many say the games are a chance to form new friendships or catch up with old ones.
"We sat up on the 40/50 yard line and we met friends, we all took pictures, exchanged numbers, people from ages 80 on down to like 22, so it was great, we all bonded," said Grutka.
"I think it's fun because if my buddies don't come, I've got my dad to hang out with, have guy time and it's just really fun," said Owen Edwards of Rome.
The always lively student section brought their support for the team, who gave them a lot to cheer about, winning 54 to zero. And while there are challenging opponents ahead, fans say they have a lot of confidence in the team.
"Clemson looks like it's going to be a tough, tough game, if they can keep up what they did today, they're gonna be doing really well," said Treharne.
The team now turns their focus to next week's game against Tulane and the fans hope they can keep the winning ways going.
