SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse business leaders are trying to spark the conversation about the future of Interstate 81 with social media.
The group CenterState CEO is urgin people to use the hashtag "81Questions" on Twitter and Facebook to post comments about the future of the highway and the city.
Planning for a solution to replace the aging road has been worked on for several years. Now, there are two possibilities including reconstruction, or a boulevard strategy. However, business leaders said the conversation is far from over.
"Public comments are critical, they will shape the future of this interstate as it runs through the center of the city. And people need to know that, they need to engage with that," said Rob Simpson, President of CenterState CEO. "They need to ask the right questions to ensure that we as a community get the right solution."
Simpson said this is the opportunity of a lifetime. He hopes Syracuse will follow other cities that have redefined their downtowns through transformational highway projects.
The public will also have more opportunities to weigh in on the project once an environmental review is completed.
