CANASTOTA, N.Y. -- A subcontractor reportedly burned in an accident at a Madison County wastewater treatment plant last week has died.
Family members say Rick Whitney, 58, died at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston this weekend. They say Whitney was either welding or getting ready to weld in a tank at a wastewater treatment plant in Canastota Wednesday. They say they were told something exploded, burning Whitney over 96 percent of his body.
Whitney was taken to Upstate University Hospital and later transferred to Boston.
Whitney's family says they're making funeral arrangements for Saturday.
OSHA and an unnamed insurance company are investigating. OSHA says they plan to release more information in a month or so, but it could take three to four months for anything conclusive.
Canastota police and fire declined to comment.
