SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- In September, the American Red Cross is working to help communities prepare for disaster.
A day of preparedness was held at the Red Cross Office at 344 West Genesee Street. It features a preparedness mall that teaches people how to do CPR and build a preparedness kit.
The organization is also accepting blood donations.
"Typically what happens is when there's a big disaster, the local blood drives, the local blood supply chain is cut off. People just don't have the time to give blood. So we need to make up the difference in other parts of the region," explained Rosie Taravella, American Red Cross of Central New York Region CEO.
The Red Cross is open until 4:30 p.m. every day if you are interested in donating your blood.
