Local Meals on Wheels programs are looking for volunteers. As YNN's Brad Vivacqua reports, many regional chapters are looking for more volunteers for the winter months.
NORTH SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The North Area Meals on Wheels program is just one of the local chapters in need of more volunteers.
According to program officials, kitchen helpers and drivers are needed to help prepare and deliver meals to homebound people in Northern Onondaga County. Many of the chapter's volunteers leave the area during the winter months, resulting in fewer volunteers.
Anyone can volunteer just a few hours each week during the mornings.
"So we're looking for anybody that can just go in, talk to the clients, deliver, are willing to drive," said Lisa Gasque, North Area Meals on Wheels Volunteer Coordinator. "But, you're going have to stand on your feet for a little bit of time so, it is nice to have different generations of volunteers, and it also increases the camaraderie between everybody when there is a diverse age group here."
If you're interested in volunteering as a driver, Gasque said there are short and long routes available. She added volunteering can be a fun and rewarding experience.
