ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY, N.Y. -- When you think of North Country wines, you don't generally think of St. Lawrence County, but a new proposal may change that.
State Senator Patty Ritchie announced Monday that she will introduce new legislation in January to create a St. Lawrence County Wine Trail, with stops in Lisbon, Black Lake and Winthrop.
Local officials hail the move as one that can help bring more tourists to the economically challenged area.
"Having a wine trail or spirits trail rambling through St. Lawrence County will bring visitors here. There is more to St. Lawrence County than just fishing. We have wineries, three or four of them now. We have a brewery starting up," said Pat McKeown, St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce CEO.
Efforts will focus on getting the department of transportation to install winery signs along major roads in the county to alert passerby of the nearby vineyards.
