ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- More honors for the two men who helped following a brutal attack in Clay earlier this year.
Lori Bresnahan and a ten-year-old girl were attacked in the parking lot of the Great Northern Mall last March. The child was raped, then they both were taken to Verplank Road in Clay where Bresnahan was bound and stabbed. The child was able to escape, but Bresnahan died of her injuries.
William Cregg and John Harkey were in the area and were able to get the child to safety and provide comfort to Bresnahan. They were honored for their courage and quick thinking Monday. State Senators John DeFrancisco and David Valesky presented them with the New York State Senate Liberty Award.
"It's not so much about John and I receiving an award, but doing the right thing. If we all try and do the right thing for our community, we'll have a better place to live," Cregg said.
"I don't think just anybody would have stopped. They rendered aid. They did more than just stop. They were there and they rendered aid and comfort," said Mary Holland, Bresnahan's cousin.
Cregg and Harkey were also honored back in May with a Special Recognition Award from the District Attorney.
