HERKIMER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Herkimer County legislators honor their veterans, declaring their community a Purple Heart county.
Six Purple Heart recipients attended the legislature's meeting Wednesday. The Purple Heart is given to veterans who were wounded or killed while in war.
Members of the Military Order of the Purple Heart say this kind of declaration is a conversation starter, especially for youth.
"That's educational for our young people to realize the sacrifices that our men and women in the military have made in the pursuit of freedom and to maintain our freedoms as we know them," said William Nazario, Military Order of the Purple Heart State Commander.
It's their goal to eventually have all 62 counties in New York State pass this kind of resolution. So far, there are eight counties, two cities and a number of towns who've made the declaration.
