Utica College is offering a new accelerated nursing degree to accommodate the growing job market for registered nurses. YNN's Brad Vivacqua has more on the new program, and its grand opening.
LIVERPOOL, N.Y. -- The new hybrid program with Utica College combines lab work and online study, and the entire program can be completed in about one year.
The program is idea for anyone who already has a bachelors degree, but may be looking for a second career as a registered nurse.
Utica Colelge started offering the program at its Liverpool location in January. However, Thursday marks the official grand opening ceremony for the program.
The Liverpool site is equipped with a simulation lab with the same medical equipment used in hospitals and healthcare facilities around the country.
According to college officials, the hybrid program prepares students for the national licensing exam to become a registered nurse.
"They're going to learn health assessment. They're going to learn skills. We do simulation where you actually put them in to a patient situation," explained Dr. Donna Gregory, Utical College Assistant Nursing Professor. "They can practice some of the higher risk things that they're not going to see on the floor. And, really get comfortable with patient situations here so when they go to their clinical they've experienced things."
The facility is located on the third floor of the New York State Thruway Building on Elwood Davis Road in Liverpool. The program is currently full with 72 students, but the next term begins January 6.
