UTICA, N.Y. -- If you'd like to have a shot at becoming a Utica police officer, the deadline is coming up fast.
The police department is looking to fill several positions over the next few months. Candidates have to take a civil service exam in November and you have to sign up by this Friday. If you pass that, there's a physical and psychological exam. Then candidates will be sent through a six month police academy course.
Utica police say they've had a record number of people already sign up, which they say will make each phase pretty competitive.
"The interesting thing about that is that we have openings now, but these tests are good for several years and potentially by 2015, we could have 30 or 40 openings," said Utica Police Sergeant Steve Hauck.
Candidates need to submit their application at the civil service department on the second floor of Utica City Hall. The office is open until 4:30 p.m.
