ELMIRA HEIGHTS, N.Y. -- From small town girl... to hitting the big city as the 'Queen of Nails.' Katie Cazorla grew up in Elmira Heights. But it's no surprise that she's living out her dream in Los Angeles.
"And ever since I was little I always told my parents and everyone around me annoyingly, I would say, 'I'm going to have my own show someday,'" said Katie Cazorla, celebrity nail expert.
"She had a vision, a dream in her head, since she was a little kid, a little girl. She wanted to do this and she did," said Jean and Barbara Cazorla, Katie's parents.
Katie spent only two years at the University of Kentucky before moving out to L.A. in 1998, but it wasn't an easy move.
"And I couldn't get a job because to fill out an application you had to have an address and I was living in my car so, it was really, really frustrating for almost two months," said Katie Cazorla.
She originally moved out there as a stand up comedian, then was featured in various television shows but finally decided she needed a change. So, she learned how to professionally do manicures and pedicures and opened the well-known, Painted Nail Salon in March 2009.
"And it just so happened that someone I invited, invited their neighbor and he came to the opening. It was crazy, Brian McKnight sang and Kenny G performed, It was insane. And he was like, 'you should have your own show,'" said Katie Cazorla.
So, sure enough she got hooked up with the right team and her show, 'Nail Files' debuted in June 2011.
In the second season, Katie and the reality show crew came back to Chemung County to film an entire episode for 'Katie Cazorla Day' in Elmira Heights.
“The mayor and board gave her the key to the village, they had a little ceremony at the park it was very nicely done, and she said ‘I didn't forget my roots,’” said Jean Cazorla.
She hasn't because she told us she still misses the change of seasons in Upstate, various restaurants and wine tasting in Watkins Glen.
“I would rather come home then go to a really nice spa because it’s more rejuvenating and humbling and real. Rather than some crazy spa that gives you a crappy massage anyway,” said Katie Cazorla.
Now every time she comes home she's welcomed by her own sign on Oakwood Avenue that reads, 'Home of Katie Cazorla Queen of Nails.' Jean and Barbara Cazorla are proud parents of four successful kids, but always knew Katie would be the one to stand out.
“I’m going to do something else but will be very successful. No matter the odds,” said Jean Cazorla.
“No matter what the odds are, like I said against all odds,” said Barbara Cazorla.
And she has. She's beaten all odds. She came from a small Upstate New York community and is now doing what she loves, and she's doing it her own way.
“I don’t follow rules in business. I don’t follow rules in the typical way of doing things and I think that has really helped me stay focused on what my end prize is,” said Cazorla.
For this dreamer, the work continues. She's introducing new nail products and is looking to open a tea shop.
The Painted Nail Salon had to be moved out of its existing location due to lease issues, but will open back up this December in the W Hotel in Hollywood.
