SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Neighbors in the 100 block of N. Midler Ave. say their street is a quiet one.
"I mean, lots of traffic, but not really any problems. I mean, not like what I just heard about," said Brooke Kent, a longtime Eastwood resident who moved to the street at the beginning of the year.
Police responded to 143 N. Midler around 4:30 Saturday morning. There they found Larae Williams, 21, shot in the face. She was taken to the hospital in critical condition, but this was just part of a busy night for Syracuse Police.
"We're pushed to our max right now working two very violent crimes that took place within a short period of time," said Syracuse Police Sgt. Tom Connellan.
Hours before Williams was shot, officers were called to Calcano's Tavern shortly after closing time.
"There was a crowd of people standing outside when the suspect just walked right up into the crowd, took out a handgun, and shot two people," said Sgt. Connellan.
Alex Xavier Rivero Rosa, 20, died of his injuries. His death follows a string of violent incidents in the city, including the deaths of James Gifford on September 25 and Shqair Shqair on Tuesday.
Gifford, 70, was randomly beaten outside a 7-11, while Shqair was shot during a robbery at his pizza shop.
Police say overall, they haven't seen an increase in violent crime, but a number of those incidents they've investigated recently have involved innocent people as victims.
"Those are innocent victim crimes that just kind of shake our community, and I think that's where the perception is, but as far as the numbers shake out, we're at or below where we were last year," said Connellan.
One number that is climbing steadily higher: this year's homicides. The death of Rosa brought that number to 19, the city's highest since 2009.
Larae Williams is in critical condition, as is Airstedes Lopez, 28, the second victim in the Calcano's shooting.
Police say they believe the attack on Williams was a targeted one, and they're looking for a 21-year-old suspect.
Officials say the victims in the Calcano's shooting may also have been singled out. No charges have been filed, but they say progress has been made in that case.
