AUBURN, N.Y. -- A ceremony celebrated the start of renovations at the Mercy Health & Rehabilitation Center in Auburn.
When construction is complete, the center will have 300 skilled nursing beds serving the Cayuga County community.
As part of the deal, the Cayuga County nursing home will close. The new building will be operated by a Loretto subsidiary.
It will feature activity rooms and more common space for people in their care.
Administrators say the move will help them continue to provide quality services.
"Both facilities provide very good care. With Loretto behind us, things will be stabilized. We will be able to do wonderful new things for everybody. The renovation is just the first step. But a major step," said John Ognibene with Mercy Health & Rehabilitation.
Loretto will take over operations on January 1, 2014. Construction will be finished in the spring of 2015.
