ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY, N.Y. -- In the shadow of the burned steeple of Gunnison Chapel, St. Lawrence University president William Fox pledged that the bells will ring again.
The steeple was damaged in a fire early Sunday morning and collapsed Sunday night.
A solemn, yet hopeful ceremony was held Tuesday to bring the community together in the face of the weekend's hardships.
"This is a sacred place, but it is sacred because of the people. You've seen the people respond to this sad moment with such confidence and strength and hope," said Gunnison Chapel Chaplain Kathleen Buckley.
Most of the inside of the chapel was spared, with the exception of smoke damage.
Restoration work has already begun on the steeple and bell tower.
